There are plenty of things for everyone coming to the Alton area. Alton is full of history, antique shops and even a casino along the Mississippi River. But, plan on spending a day--at the very least--or weekend to visit Alton. Did you know that Alton is one of the oldest River towns established in 1832. In addition to that, you will find a life like statue of the Tallest Man in the Guinness Book of World Records. . . or as the Altonians like to refer to Robert Pershing Wadlow. . . "The Gentle Giant". Be sure to take time and visit the Alton Museum of History and Arts, where you will find many of Robert's personal effects, as well as many other historical items!
There are over numerous Antique & Specialty shops located within a mile radius of each other. Of those, there are six shops that are multi-dealer shops. If you are looking for a variety of items in a small area, come to the Alton Antique District.
Also, come to the Riverbend Area and see the Bald Eagles during January! Interested? See the Alton Visitor's Bureau for more information or all them toll free at 1-888-227-9612.

The Piasa (pronounced Pie-A-Saw) Bird. This was a large man eating bird that roamed the area. The
original painting, located on the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi, was so dramatic that it was noted in the journals of
Jacques Marquette when they first explored the region. In the summer of 1998, the painting of the Piasa bird was restored by local volunteers and moved closer to the city, near to its original location.
